Aham Onyike, MD

Board-Certified, Fellowship-Trained Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Aham Onyike is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of orthopedic conditions and injuries, from the simplest to the most complex. He completed his training in 2005 and has an outstanding reputation among his patients and peers. Dr. Onyike is currently accepting new patients at his offices in the U.S. and Nigeria. Dr. Aham Onyike specializes in joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee – and is widely known for his excellence as a “Patient’s Choice” physician in these areas. His other areas of expertise include general orthopedics, fracture care, work-related injuries, and sports medicine and athletic injuries.

Dr. Onyike was born in Boulder, Colorado, and returned with his parents to Nigeria at the age of 3, where he completed his primary and secondary education. He returned to the U.S. in his final year of high school and then attended Penn State University for his undergraduate education. He subsequently obtained his medical degree at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark in 1999. He completed his residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he was awarded the title of Resident of the Year in his final year. He completed his fellowship training in adult reconstruction at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Onyike received his board certification in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

In the first phase of his career, Dr. Onyike served as an assistant professor in orthopedic surgery at Howard University Hospital, as well as an orthopedic surgery consultant at the VA Medical Center and Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C. In these capacities, he was involved in medical student and resident education and research as well as patient care. He developed tremendous experience in treating extremely complex problems of the hip and knee joints as well as revising complications after previous surgery. He has been published in national medical journals and is a frequent presenter at medical conferences.

Dr. Onyike established Avante Orthopaedics as a private practice in Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C., in 2013. He used this as a hub to independently continue his orthopedic services in the United States as well as Nigeria. During this period, he and colleagues established a practice in Lagos, Nigeria, named the Center for Advanced Specialty Surgery (CASS). The practice subsequently expanded to include a boutique hospital practice and a second location in Owerri, Imo State.

In 2017, Dr. Onyike was recruited by the Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center to build an orthopedic practice from the ground up. He embraced this new opportunity and developed a state-of-the-art practice for the hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He provided complex orthopedic care for hundreds of patients in the mid-Virginia corridor while building a new practice for the hospital system. Upon completion of this work, he returned to the Washington, D.C., area and accepted a position at the Georgetown Medstar Orthopaedic Institute with an office location in Brandywine, Maryland. He currently sees patients out of this office.

Outside of the U.S., Dr. Onyike has led and participated in orthopedic teams on medical missions to Africa, particularly Nigeria. During these trips, Dr. Onyike and his team have performed advanced orthopedic care for trauma victims and for children with deformities. To advance this work and also to serve a larger need for orthopedic services in the region, he established two orthopedic hospitals for the Center for Advanced Specialty Surgery (CASS) in Lagos and Owerri. He and his team have performed over 250 hip and knee joint replacements, including revision surgeries. He is also a co-founder of the nonprofit foundation, Operation Stand-Walk-Run.

Dr. Onyike served as the president of the Washington, D.C.-Maryland-Virginia branch of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) from 2018 – 2022. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society (JRGOS), National Medical Association (NMA), and the Nigerian Orthopaedic Association (NOA).

He is a resident of Washington, D.C., and a father of two boys.  His extracurricular interests include soccer, basketball, disc jockeying, cooking, and traveling.
